Bogue Banks is a 21 mile barrier island located at the southern tip of the Outer Banks, just off the coast of North Carolina. The island is located in Carteret County
NC and can be accessed via two different bridges. The more heavily traveled route is across Bogue Sound from
Morehead City to
Atlantic Beach, however one can also cross and go from Cape Carteret to
Bogue Banks is a place of stunning beauty, where warm, friendly people enjoy all that the
NC coastal living has to offer. The communities on Bogue Banks are mostly private, and the island is
largely un-commercialized, however the communities continue to thrive on their booming tourism industry. Attractions like the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium, the Fort Macon State Park, and the endless outdoor activities that the ocean offers continue to call visitors back year after year. In addition to these attractions and the beautiful Crystal Coast Beaches, Bogue Banks is also home to the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area, a 265 acre maritime forest that is protected and managed by the state.
In addition to the beaches and attractions, Bogue Banks is a place steeped in history. One can see from the historic marker, at mile marker 7 at the corner of N.C. 58 and Roosevelt Boulevard, that the area has a history dating back over 400 years as the spot notes the first landing of Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524. Giovanni was a Florentine explorer whose trip was sponsored by France and thus ushered in the
